Introduction to the ASP.NET MVC Framework

Create websites using the new ASP.NET MVC Framework from Microsoft. In this presentation we will discuss how the ASP.NET MVC Framework is different from ASP.NET Webforms as well as the strengths and weaknesses of each. We will create routes, views, controllers, and controller factories as well as discuss different ways to communicate between views and controllers. We will also leverage various IoC Tools, like Castle Windsor and Unity, to inject dependencies into controllers as well as use AJAX with the ASP.NET MVC Framework.

Data Access Tips & Techniques

Learn and explore the variety of ways you can access data using ADO.NET, the Data Access Application Block, LINQ To SQL, ADO.NET Entity Framework, ADO.NET Data Services, and the ASP.NET 3.5 Dynamic Data Framework. In this session we will walk-thru and build several examples for each technique as well as discuss tips, strengths, and weaknesses.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting! We will be talking about quite a few technologies...

She was patiently waiting for me to listen to one given all her efforts, so I took in another MIX08 Video by Pablo Castro: RESTful Data Services with the ADO.NET Data Services Framework. I feel like I have attended a Saturday Code Camp given all the MIX 08 Videos I watched in the past couple of days:

MIX08 Presentation : Real-World AJAX with ASP.NET Video by Nikhil Kothari

ASP.NET Dynamic Data Websites Presentation at Mix 08

I haven't talked too much about ADO.NET Data Services, but I have been playing with it along with ASP.NET Dynamic Data and the ASP.NET MVC Framework for quite some time. ADO.NET Data Services used to be called Project Astoria and it was presented at MIX 07.

Like all the MIX08 Videos I have seen thus far, I highly recommend watching Pablo Castro's RESTful Data Services with the ADO.NET Data Services Framework. Pablo does an excellent job of introducing the basics of ADO.NET Data Services.

Pablo demonstrates a number of things:

ADO.NET Data Services using ADO.NET Entity Framework to AdventureWorks

ADO.NET Data Services to a Custom IQueryable Provider ( via IEnumerable.AsQueryable() )

Using HTTP and JSON Clients

Fiddler - Pablo is a Fiddler MadMan :)

Lazy-Loading and Eager-Loading as they apply to ADO.NET Data Services

Attaching ADO.NET Data Services Metadata to the ADO.NET Entity Framework Conceptual Model

Security, Authentication, and Interceptors

Even if you don't care a thing about ADO.NET Data Services, I recommend watching Pablo use Fiddler to get a feel for its power :)

There was no new drop of the ADO.NET Data Services at MIX08, even though attendees did receive an interim build on their MIX 08 DVD. Pablo Castro mentioned that they expect to have a new ADO.NET Data Services Beta 1 in about 3 weeks. Very cool!

I will be presenting at SQLSaturday in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, February 16, 2008.

Here is the abstract:

SQL Server Data Access Tips and Techniques

You have optimized and tuned your SQL Server Database and now you need to access the data from your application. Learn and explore the variety of ways you can access the data using ADO.NET, the Data Access Application Block, LINQ To SQL, ADO.NET Entity Framework, ADO.NET Data Services, and the ASP.NET 3.5 Dynamic Data Framework. In this session we will walk-thru and build several examples for each technique as well as discuss tips, strengths, and weaknesses. Come with your questions and explore the wonderful world of data access to SQL Server!

We only have an hour, so I will be prepared to discuss and demo:

ADO.NET 2.0

Enterprise Library Data Access Application Block

LINQ To SQL

ADO.NET Entity Framework

ADO.NET Data Services

ASP.NET Dynamic Data Websites

This is subject to change, of course, but I thought I would break the presentation into thirds:

20 minutes: ADO.NET and DAAB

20 minutes: LINQ To SQL and ASP.NET Dynamic Data

20 minutes: ADO.NET Entity Framework and ADO.NET Data Services

This isn't a deep technical session. It's goal is to expose you to data access options from Microsoft that exist today and are coming down the pike. I will be happy to answer more technical questions after the presentation.

See you there!

If you haven't played with ADO.NET Data Services, I highly recommend you give it a peek. I wrote a Getting Started with ADO.NET Data Services on CodeBetter if you would like to get up and running with it in about 5 minutes using LINQ To SQL as the data provider.

ADO.NET Data Services is included in the Microsoft ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions Preview CTP along with the ASP.NET MVC Framework and ASP.NET Dynamic Data Websites.

The Project Astoria Team just announced the release of the ADO.NET Data Services Silverlight Add-On, which introduces a version of the client library that can run inside the Microsoft Silverlight 1.1 September Refresh. This library also allows developers to execute queries asynchronously, providing a more natural interaction model for a web-centric application.
