For my money, you just can't beat the UpdatePanel for ease of use and ease of maintenance. However if you need to squeeze every last bit of performance out of your ASP.NET web applications, providing search functionality using ASP.NET AJAX Javascript Calls to a Web Service backend and doing the HTML formatting on the client will avoid the partial-page postback and larger payloads over the wire.
ASP.NET AJAX IN ACTION showed up on my doorstep late last night, and I have changed the Javascript code a bit to take advantage of the ASP.NET AJAX Javascript libraries more to 1) abstract browser differences, 2) implement client-side page lifecycle, and 3) use helper methods. Still get the same wonderful performance using server-side validation of the URL via a web service call as verified by Fiddler.
I can avoid the whole partial-page postback needs of the ServerSideValidationExtender in the Validation Guidance Bundle in the Web Client Software Factory to clue the user in on whether the URL they typed in is valid by making a ASP.NET AJAX Client-Side Network Call to a web service. Read more...
My brain is working overtime on the simple concept of doing server-side validation using ASP.NET AJAX in webforms just like the ServerSideValidationExtender in the Validation Guidance Bundle. I really dig the ServerSideValidationExtender Control, but am trying to better understand alternative solutions and the pros and cons of each. Let's start with the ServerSideValidationExtender and ASP.NET 2.0 CustomValidator Control. Read more...
For kicks I thought I would create a rough Custom Profile Provider using LINQ To SQL since I was creating a custom profile provider for an application today anyway ( not using LINQ To SQL ). In the end, I think using LINQ To SQL is overkill for a custom profile provider that would be better served with a couple of stored procedures if using a database. It did make for some interesting playing. Read more...
