New Apple MacBook and MacBook Pros - Better Graphics - Glass TrackPad - Better Aluminum Construction

Update - You can read my review:

Apple announced a number of changes to their MacBook and MacBook Pros. Rather than chasing the rumor mill, the best thing to do is just visit the Apple Website and look at all the specs and features.

IMHO, you can't buy a better notebook than a MacBook or MacBook Pro, whether you choose to run MAC OS X or Windows XP SP3 or Vista, but I was personally hoping that a new Apple NetBook or lower-priced MacBook Air-like Notebook would be announced for my wife that was around the price of a Dell Mini. This didn't happen, unfortunately, even though Apple did reduce the price of a MacBook by $100, making them $999 and breaking the $1000 barrier.

New MacBook and MacBook Pro from Apple

Since the Apple NetBook didn't happen, I was hoping for a MacBook Pro with enough substantial gains in technology that I would want to give my wife my current MacBook Pro ( 17“ Hi-Def LED Back-Lit Display, 4GB RAM, 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 200GB 7200 RPM Drive) and get another one. Unfortunately, that didn't happen either. The newer 15“ MacBook Pro does have some neat enhancements-

  • a better NVIDIA Chipset, actually two on board - one NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, which will dramatically improve graphics for gaming or high-end graphics work
  • a newer Multi-Touch Glass TrackPad which has additional gestures and is easier to use since the TrackPad is one big button :)
  • Optional upgrade to Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8GHz CPU
  • Optional 320GB 7200-rpm hard drive or 128GB solid-state drive
  • Newer DisplayPort connector to replace the klunky and large DVI Connectors
  • Better Aluminum Construction
  • etc...

But there is not enough for me to justify a newer one.

Now if you are in the market for a new NoteBook, I would check out the new MacBooks as they have many of the cool features in my 6-month-old MacBook Pro and the MacBook is $700 cheaper than my MacBook Pro. Definitely some substantial gains in the new MacBooks.

Apple also announced a new 24“ LED Cinema Display. I have the older 30“ Cinema Display and what I like most about the new 24“ display is the built-in iSight Camera! Since I spend most of my time in the office looking at the 30“ display, I would have really liked that it had a built-in iSight Camera as well. Of course, I just stuck an external camera on it, but it would be nice to not have those extra wires. The new 24“ LED Cinema Display also has the newer DisplayPort Connector as well, so again, you don't have to deal with those bulky DVI connectors from the MacBook to the External Display.

For new buyers there is definitely some good stuff. For me, I'll wait for the new releases next year.
