Creating Screencasts for iPhone Using Camtasia - Patterns & Practices iPhone Screencasts

iPhone ScreencastsI mentioned before that now when you add Patterns & Practices Guidance to your iPhone's Home Screen it displays a custom iPhone Icon-

In addition, I just uploaded four of my Patterns & Practices Screencasts in iPhone Format ( m4v ):

I'll convert a few of the other screencasts over to the m4v format as I find the time, but really my goal is to just provide the screencasts in an m4v format as I create new videos. Note the screen size has been optimized for the 480 x 320 size of the iPhone and iPhone Touch.

Camtasia and Zoom and Pan

Essentially what I did was re-create these screencasts using Camtasia and did not choose Zoom and Pan. What this means is that the screencasts are just shrunken version of the deskop-sized screencasts. The screencasts are not zoomed in anyway to make the videos easier to view on the iPhone. In my opinion, this makes the screencasts less practical, but still interesting none-the-less. However, those of you who are used to watching screencasts on a mobile device will probably enjoy it.

This isn't to say that I did not attempt Zoom and Pan in Camtasia to make these screencasts more appropriate for the iPhone. After spending about an hour on one screencast to make it more iPhone friendly two things came to mind:

  1. Even after an hour I still had probably another hour to get it perfect
  2. The Zoom and Pan doubled the size of the iPhone Video from 30MB to 60MB

The amount of time to edit the screencast and the huge jump in bandwidth doesn't make me feel too good about Zoom and Pan. I need to keep playing with it and plan to come out with more iPhone friendly formats for the new screencasts in the future.

Conclusion

Check out the iPhone Patterns & Practices Screencasts above. This was my first attempt at anything other than WMV so be kind :)
