As a new Mac owner, I always like to try out the Mac OS X Leopard standard applications, like Mail, iChat, iCal, Safari, etc. before moving on to 3rd party applications. Such is the case with an RSS Reader. Although I tend to use Google Reader for RSS, I challenged myself to use Mac Mail as my RSS Reader so I could get a good feel for its features. For the most part it met my RSS needs since I am not a real RSS Power User. At the same time, however, I wanted to see what other RSS Readers are available for the Apple Mac.
The newsreader I keep hearing about is NetNewsWire, which is a free RSS reader from Newsgator for the Mac. Right away I was taken by its slick user interface. Shown below is a UI showing a blog entry I wrote mentioning my Unity IoC and ASP.NET Screencast. It provides nice organization of news feeds, several different ways to layout the UI, a cool list of blog posts visited on the right-hand side, and other nice features.

I am just starting to use it so I will save my review for a later day, but if you are in the market for a free RSS Reader for the Apple Mac, you may want to give NetNewsWire a shot. You can learn more about it here.
If you have been using Mac Mail for your RSS Reader and just realized you cannot export your RSS feeds from Mac Mail, check out my previous post, Exporting RSS Feeds From Mac Mail to NetNewsWire or Google Reader, for some guidance.
