Any new Mac owner is probably going to use Mac Mail initially for all his/her RSS needs unless you prefer an online news reader like Google Reader. However, at some point you are likely to try a more feature-rich news reader, like NetNewsWire, which has a few more bells and whistles. And when that day comes when you want to switch from Mac Mail to NetNewsWire, you will immediately look for the Export RSS Feeds Option in Mac Mail. And guess what? Sadly, there isn't an Export RSS Feeds Option in Mac Mail.
Apparently Mac Mail had so many neat features added to it for OS X Leopard, but somebody didn't think that you might want to export your RSS Feeds from Mac Mail and import them into another newsreader.
Let this be a warning to you new Mac owners who are starting to add several RSS Feeds in Mac Mail, better that you start as soon as possible with a 3rd party RSS Reader like NetNewsWire or other application that will allow you to export your RSS Feeds to OPML. If like me you are stuck with a whole bunch of RSS Feeds in Mac Mail and you want to export them, the best you can do at this very moment is try one of these methods that have been offered up by the Mac community:
They are essentially the same solution at somewhat solving the Mac Mail RSS Export Problem, but if you are not comfortable with the command line you can run an AppleScript. Personally I found the AppleScript Export easier.
The problem with these solutions, however, is that it just creates a list of the RSS Links and not an OPML file, which is what you will inevitably need to import your feeds into an RSS Reader. I am sure there is probably some way to create an OPML File in AppleScript, but I am not familiar with AppleScript at this moment to pull it off. I just wrote a quick C# .NET Console Application that created the proper OPML by doing a web request to the RSS Feed and getting its Title and then creating an OPML File. It was fun to create, but Mac Mail is incredibly lame for not allowing you to export RSS Feeds.
Hopefully you find out sooner than later and avoid using Mac Mail for RSS, or hopefully you won't need anything more than Mac Mail and never have to switch :)
May the Mac Mail RSS Export Solutions above help you in your endeavors.
