I noticed on the VMware site that you can now download and try VMware Fusion 2.0 Beta 1, and better yet, it is a free update for those using VMware Fusion 1.x. Sweet! Sadly, however, I don't have another Mac other than my MacBook Pro to test it out.
Per the VMware Fusion website, the key features of VMware Fusion 2.0 are:
- Multiple Display Support: VMware Fusion 2.0 Beta 1 offers the first true multi-display support for your Mac, with additional physical displays showing up as individual displays in your virtual machine. This sound really interesting.
- DirectX 9.0 Experimental Support - VMware Fusion 2.0 Beta 1 raises the bar for 3D acceleration yet again, offering experimental support for DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 2.
- Import Parallels and Virtual PC - VMware Fusion 2.0 Beta 1 integrates importation of Parallels Desktop and Virtual PC for Mac virtual machines. It will also convert your Boot Camp partition to a virtual machine.
- Easier Windows Printing on a Mac - VMware Fusion 2.0 Beta 1 seamlessly lets your Windows virtual machines print to any printer attached to your Mac, without any additional setup.
Pretty cool, stuff, but I agree with VMware in that it is not enough to charge for an upgrade.
I have been pretty happy with VMware Fusion, but I haven't tried Parallels so I really can't compare the two.
