Pro ADO.NET 2.0 and Pro ASP.NET 2.0 with C# 2005 Books

After two days of struggling to find change between the cushions of the couch, I was able to collect enough money to buy a couple of books on ADO.NET 2.0 and ASP.NET 2.0.  They shipped today, so hopefully they will be here early next week and I can begin my review of them.

Pro ADO.NET 2.0

This one was written by my fellow CodeBetter Blogger, Sahil Malik, so I had to buy it ;)  I know Sahil put a lot of time into it, because he battled Carpal Tunnel Syndrome while writing it.  Sahil really knows his ADO.NET and is very much a real-world developer, so it should be good.  Amazon has it for a good price, so you may want to check it out.

Here is the description:

“Pro ADO.NET 2.0 is a guide and reference for.NET developers who are looking to further their understanding of ADO.NET 2.0.

This book takes a new approach, focusing on the practical tasks like connecting to the database, retrieving data, and working with transactions, rather than rehashing much of the MSDN documentation. Pro ADO.NET 2.0 offers the deep and much needed practical understanding, viewpoint, and knowledge developers are looking for.

This book explains what is available in ADO.NET by associating it with the need to solve a practical problem and better architect an application, rather than mugging up the hundreds of classes and properties available in the framework.“

Pro ASP.NET 2.0 with C# 2005

I don't know Matthew McDonald and haven't read one of his books, but he continually puts out book after book on ASP.NET.  He clearly is doing something right and I will let you know what that is :)  Again, Amazon has Pro ASP.NET 2.0 with C# 2005 for a decent price.  Check it out.

Here is the description:

“The book will teach you ASP.NET 2.0 in five clear steps. You will learn:

  • Core concepts of ASP.NET 2.0. Why it’s special. What its fundamental principals are. The basics of Visual Studio. How ASP.NET 2.0 controls are created, and how they fit into ASP.NET 2.0 pages, ultimately creating full applications
  • Data access details. The intricacies of ADO.NET 2.0 and how to perform data binding to many sources—from databases, to file-streams, to XML
  • Security. Once considered the Achilles heel of all Windows web applications, security has been completely revamped in ASP.NET 2.0. This section explains the various forms of available security, and how to best apply them
  • Taking things further using Advanced User Interface Techniques. This includes User Controls, Customer Server Controls, client-side JavaScript and GDI+. This is where the real strength of ASP.NET 2.0 lies
  • Web Services. In an increasingly connected world, working with web services grows in importance. This book will show you how to work with them
